Wildbirds & Peacedrums

Swedish duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums sound both out of place and right at home on Leaf. On the one hand the band trades in icy electronics with plenty of room for ambience but there are quite a number of songs that feature mostly Mariam Wallentin's soulful voice soaring solely above a clatter of sparse drums. The latter is where the band really excels. Sounding like a Motown track with most of the elements stripped away; their minimalist soul stabs straight for the temple. It's as if they took away everything unnecessary and just kept the raw beating heart of the tracks; threw it on the table and recorded that. Don't get me wrong though the rest of the album is no standard fare; still very much wrapped in the frozen still life paintings that many Leaf artists evoke. This is just another argument for the artistry of Swedish musicians; so cold but still so incredibly full of life.
