The Shaggs - Philosophy of the World
As far as family bands go The Partridges have got nothing on the Wiggins sisters. Now ok I know they can't really sing and yeah the timing on most of the Shaggs' songs are spastic at best but
somehow this just makes the effort all the more charming. The Shaggs came from rural New Hampshire and somehow their father was so blinded by love that he believed The Shaggs were a truly great band. Now on one level he was right because their heartfelt songs prove that anybody can get a band together and they pave the way for thousands of indie bands thumbing their nose at standards of listenability. They are the prequel to Jandek, Daniel Johnston and on down to the rise of simplicity with Beat Happening and I'll be damned if Twee didn't start right here. They wrote a song called "My Pal Foot Foot" for chrissakes. I mean what the hell is even going on there? That song makes about 6 seconds of sense. And so the band almost slipped into almost certain obscurity but luckily Frank Zappa got his hands on a copy and talked it up during an interview as one of his favorite albums, sparking a renewed bit of interest. Subsequently a few compilations were reissued and finally this original uh "masterpiece" in its unaltered form is back on the shelves. If you can see through the talent to the charm then you can certainly appreciate The Shaggs.

I heard this band earlier because it was one of Kurt Cobain's favourites. I don't get it, I think it's positively awful

Didn't "Philosophy of the World" already get the reissue treatment from RCA Records back in 1999?
